Capturing the progress shaping transport refrigeration

The Cold Chain Federation has launched the first UK-wide census of Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs).

The census is designed to build a credible evidence base on the progress, investment, and challenges across the sector as it transitions towards lower-emission technologies

The TRU Census will help demonstrate the progress already being made across the sector while informing future government policy and investment decisions.

It is open to both members and non-members operating at least one refrigerated van, rigid or trailer, and will close at midnight on the 29th of May.

If you’d like to download the questions in advance of responding, you can do so here.

Why are we doing this?

Transport refrigeration plays a critical role in maintaining food safety, supporting the UK’s supply chains and enabling the cold chain to function effectively. At the same time, the sector is undergoing significant change as it works towards decarbonisation and the transition to new technologies. However, there is currently no consolidated dataset capturing the scale of activity, investment, and progress across the sector.

The TRU Census will help fill this gap.

The insights gathered will:

  • Demonstrate the progress already being made across the industry
  • Highlight innovation and investment in new technologies
  • Identify where policy is supporting the transition, and where barriers remain
  • Strengthen the sector’s engagement with government

Policymakers respond to data. The stronger the evidence base, the stronger the industry’s voice.

Why participate?

By taking part in the TRU Census, you will help:

  • Strengthen the collective voice of the sector
  • Ensure government policy reflects operational realities
  • Showcase the progress being made across transport refrigeration
  • Support future policy development and investment

The more organisations that participate, the stronger our collective voice.

How will the data be used?

All responses will be treated as strictly confidential.

  • No individual organisation will be identified in any public reporting
  • No responses will be attributed without permission
  • Findings will be reported only in an aggregated and anonymised form

The insights gathered will support the Cold Chain Federation’s policy engagement with government and will inform future sector reporting, including the Cold Chain Report.
