The Winners of the Cold Chain Sustainability Awards 2024

The Cold Chain Sustainability Awards 2024 winners were revealed last week (13 March 2024) at a presentation during the Cold Chain Federation’s Climate Summit at Warwick University.

Cold Chain Federation Chief Executive Phil Pluck said: “These second annual Cold Chain Sustainability Awards embody the industry’s innovation, collaboration and investment in driving forward ambitious and exciting change for the future of temperature-controlled logistics. I congratulate the winners and all those shortlisted for each category for their commitment to leading a sustainable UK cold chain. We are delighted to celebrate the impressive achievements of these dedicated businesses and individuals with these awards.”

Among the awards presented were Sustainable Cold Storage Operator of the Year which was won by F.W. Mansfield & Son, who also won the Sustainable Cold Storage of the Year category; the Sustainable Cold Chain Transport Operator of the Year award which was won by Gist; and the Cold Chain Sustainability Champion of the Year award which was won jointly by Julie Owst of Bidfood and Dr Rob Lamb of Star Refrigeration. Richard Doyle Head of Safety and Sustainability at FW Mansfield & Son said: “FW Mansfield has placed a priority on sustainability, and made a commitment we would do our very best this year. Having an industry body that is recognising good work in the industry is going to promote further improvement and promote investment, and that’s where we’re going to see real change.”

Dr Rob Lamb, Group Sales and Marketing Director of Star Refrigeration, said: “These awards are a way of demonstrating good practice, sharing good ideas and sharing innovations and how they manage to reduce energy and CO2 emissions is really important. Getting that known to industry is going to be key to achieving the goals that we’re trying to achieve. It’s a collaborative process all the way.”

The Cold Chain Climate Summit (in association with The P&M Group, Olympus Power and Alt-Solar) saw more than 200 delegates gather to examine the impacts of climate change on global food systems, how temperature-controlled logistics operators will need to adapt to operating in a different climate, and the opportunities and challenges related to a possible change from a -18C to -15C set-point for storing and transporting frozen food. The keynote speakers who brought their specialist knowledge to the Summit included Georgios Tetradis-Mairis (Head of R&D Futures, Nomad Foods); Dr Chloe Brimicombe (Climate Scientist at the University of Graz, Austria); and Dr Tim Fox (Independent Consultant in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation).
