Online Supermarket Distribution Hub Expansion in London

During the peak of the COVID-19 national lockdown, the news consistently reported of the surge in demand for online supermarket deliveries and the struggles faced by members of the public relying on them at such an uncertain time. This has certainly highlighted the important part that these services play within our evolving society and how supermarkets with such capabilities should look to adjust to cope with demand.

Following several successful projects with our online supermarket client previously, Cold Chain Federation member Stancold were pleased to be named as the preferred sub-contractor for a new project at one of their distribution hubs in north London. This warehouse serves local drivers offering convenience delivery services to homes within a 5-mile radius.

Our involvement in the preliminary stages of the project allowed us to meet on site and produce accurate costings for the client, before working with the main contractor once they were appointed to refine and plan according to the schedule of works.

Stancold are responsible for the installation of a large chiller, measuring 16m x 10m, on an existing mezzanine floor, where our design team have taken its slight slope into consideration when creating the relevant construction drawings. The team will utilise the reliable Kingspan QuadCore panel system to provide adequate insulating properties and install two hinged chiller doors for easy access.

This is accompanied by a full-height partition that runs the entire width of the warehouse, following the apex roof, to provide segregation between the mezzanine and a new dispatch area. Again, Kingspan QuadCore panels will be used to achieve a white food-safe finish. Another two hinged personnel doors are also to be installed here alongside other neatly capped openings for the client to integrate additional doors in the future.

As the project is already underway, we’re pleased with the progress made on site so far.
