Following weeks of three-tiered, regional restrictions being put in place across the country, Boris Johnson addressed the nation in a press conference on 31 October to announce a series of stricter, England-wide restrictions to tackle the autumn surge of COVID-19 cases.

From Thursday 5 November through to 2 December all non-essential businesses must close, people are being encouraged to work from home and the furlough scheme is being extended.
