BBC Features Cold Chain Federation

It was great to see BBC News feature the vital work being done across the cold chain to keep food supplies going at this crucial time. Shane appeared on Breakfast and the BBC News Channel over the weekend and then again on BBC Radio 5Live on Wake up to Money this morning.

Whilst our focus is on maintaining the vital work, we have to think about the impact this period of reduced income and slow stock movement is having on our businesses. Storage and distribution companies across the chain are losing money and they are not getting the same level of support that is being provided to the shops, restaurants and cafes at the end of the chain. For example millions of pounds in business rates relief has gone to shops and cafes, but none to the warehouses that service them.

We will continue to use media outlets like this to reinforce our case for support not just today but through the long road to recovery.

Thanks to Sara Orwid of Calderhead Refrigerated Transport and Jon Miles of NewCold for speaking up for our industry.

Listen back to Shane talking to Danni Hewson on BBC 5 Live Wake Up to Money programme this morning about the pressures on the UK cold chain caused by covid-19. Our industry needs support not just today but on the long road to recovery.
